Half wave mystery

Picked up an older Lifan 140 for a fun little project bike, and while it runs well enough, the electrical system has me scratching my head cos turns out it's using a half wave rectifier setup, and it shows lights flicker at idle, and my voltmeter jumps around like it's on caffeine. Basically yeah, I'm playing around with the idea of converting it to a full wave system (I know this is a car not a toy) but i want to get smoother output and maybe enough juice to actually run a proper headlight without relying on RPMs. Need advices, opinions, suggestions, what y`all think
 
@Saf.Gomez Good call, looking to convert that Lifan 140 to fullwave. The flickering lights and erratic voltmeter are classic halfwave symptoms. You'll need a fullwave rectifier/regulator (Shindengen SH775 or similar are quite reliable), and you'll have to float the stator ground, meaning separating the stator windings from the engine case ground.
There are plenty of tutorials out there for this specific conversion on small engines. It's a definite improvement for running modern lights and electronics without relying on RPMs. What's your current stator output like?
 
Sounds cool. a full wave setup should definitely help smooth out the voltage and give you more reliable lighting. would you know if the stator is capable of handling the upgrade? and are you planning to swap out the regulator/rectifier too?
 
Good points from both of you. Converting the stator and going full wave is the way to go. I'm also curious about the stator's output
 
Yeah man, that half wave setup is old-school and kinda sketchy. I think you can try to float the ground, toss in a solid reg/rec, and your lights will be all fine. It makes the whole system feel way more modern.
 
It's worth doing if you want smoother power and brighter lights. You have to make sure your stator can keep up. If not, the voltage issue will come back up again.
 
I had a friend who faced the same issue with his pit bike setup, those flickering lights really drove him crazy. He ended up grounding it properly and replaced it with a full-wave regulator/rectifier, and ever since, it's been running perfectly. It's definitely something to consider if your stator can handle the upgrade.

You'll definitely get more consistent power for a proper headlight and other accessories. It's a significant upgrade for reliability and usability, not 'overkill' for a custom build
