Im tryna wire a headlight on my '72 CT70 after swapping in a 140cc engine. Noticed a yellow wire coming from the stator, which I think is the power source. Can I hook the headlight straight to it? Or do I need a 12V regulator in between? Not real good with electrical stuff, any recommendations for some good ones?
 
You'll want a 12V regulator between the stator and headlight to avoid overvoltage and protect your lights, you can check out reliable brands like Shindengen or Rick's Motorsport for good regulators

Good suggestion here. Wirings can be a bit tricky, so if you're unsure like me most of the time, maybe grab a friend who's a bit more experienced or look up wiring diagrams for 140cc pit bike engines. they often use similar setups.
 
Look into a basic 12V AC regulator if you're keeping it simple, or a reg/rec combo for running a full DC setup with battery and signals. Trail Tech makes a good enough one, or even the universal GY6 style regulators work fine if you're on a budget
 
Yeah definitely run a 12V reg in there, straight wiring off the stator will toast your bulb fast. I used a GY6-style one on my last build and it held up great. Keep it simple and clean, and you'll be golden.
 
I did a similar thing with an old XR70 a long time ago, I connected the headlight directly to the stator without a regulator, and it burned out the bulb on the very first rev. After that, I tossed in an inexpensive GY6 regulator, and it's been working perfectly ever since.

most of the comments here are stop on! just want to add that most headlights run on DC, so you'll need to make sure your regulator is also a rectifier to convert the AC power from your stator to DC. Many modern regulators do both, but it's worth checking the specs
 
Like most comments here, a stabilizer is a good idea, but before you start doing that I think it's good to check if the yellow wire is truly a power source. Also, keep in mind the voltage of the stator when getting the stabilizer, you don't want to fry it on the first try.
